Sodium hypochlorite
Sodium hypochlorite is an inorganic compound, the sodium salt of hypochlorous acid. It was first produced in the 18th century by adding chlorine to lye soda. Today, sodium hypochlorite is produced on an industrial scale by electrolysis of brine. This produces sodium hydroxide and chlorine gas. Chlorine is then passed into the sodium hydroxide solution to produce sodium hypochlorite and sodium chloride. Sodium hypochlorite has a wide spectrum of activity and can be used in many industrial applications, as paper and textile industries, disinfection and water treatment, horticulture, dentistry, production of modified starch and even in pharmaceuticals, preparations containing sodium hypochlorite are applied to the skin superficially.
